SCOTTIE DADS

Calling all dads, granddads, uncles, brothers…we need you! The Lamar Middle School Scottie Dad Program is ready to kick off the 2014-2015 school year! This program is designed to increase the adult male presence on our campus, while building quality relationships between our parents and students. Scottie Dads help increase student safety during all three lunch periods, while keeping connected with their child's school life and experiences. You can sign up for all three lunch periods or just parts of the lunch periods...your help and time is much appreciated no matter what.

Please join Mr. Bennett for an informational meeting on Monday, September 22nd at 6pm in the Lamar Cafeteria.

Thank you for your support!
Questions? Contact Andrew Bennett by email or by calling 512-414-4504.

EASY WAY TO SUPPORT TEACHERS AND STAFF!

A great way to volunteer at Lamar is to be a Secret Pal for a staff member or two and provide monthly treats to show your appreciation. Even if you don't know any of the staff, you can let me know what grade or classes your student is in, and I can try to match up a staff member for you. We'd like EVERY staff member to get a secret pal, custodians, office staff, teachers, etc - everyone who works to make our school a great place for our kids. It really does lift their spirits to get surprises periodically from parents. We still have more staff to match up - so we really need your help!

If you are interested, contact Monica Poss by email or calling (512) 757-0974, or even easier, fill out the online form.

GARDEN WORKDAY A HUGE SUCCESS!

We weeded and mulched the entire garden; we turned and watered the 3-tier compost system, prepared raised beds for fall veggies and herbs, and organized the shed.

Thank you so much to our 24 volunteers, including Lamar parents, students, teachers and staff, as well as volunteers from Time Warner Cable's Austin Green Team.

A special thank you to EcoRise for connecting us with TWC volunteers, and to Mr. Willenberg, Ms. Clifton, Ms. Wasserman, Mr. Sosa, Ms. Wagner, Ms. Torrance and Ms. Gomez for giving up their Saturday morning to keep our garden healthy, productive and beautiful.

What’s next? Keep Austin Beautiful will be working with students throughout the coming weeks to plant a fall garden. Blackberries and grapes will be making their debut over the trellises later this fall, and the Austin Permaculture Guild will be installing a drip irrigation system for our 14 garden beds. Oh, and we’ll be getting 4 new baby chicks this week, to grow our flock to 6! Stop by Ms. Pena’s room to check them out :)
