GET INFORMED ABOUT PUBLIC SCHOOL LEGISLATION

Did you know that even though nearly 62% of AISD students are economically disadvantaged, our district is labeled as Chapter 41 (property rich) and we gave over $128 million to the state in recapture in the 2013-14 school year?  This year the estimate is $135 million!  The district that gives the second most is Highland Park in the Dallas area and has no economically disadvantaged students.  Chapter 41 districts do not receive a transportation allotment, so we transport 22,000 students daily without any money to help with this task.  We also uniquely give to social security, 27% of our students are English language learners, and 56% of AISD students are labeled as "at risk."

Something needs to be done to secure more funds for our district, so please reach out to your legislators!   For details and pdfs that can be printed out and distributed go to the AISD website's legislative page: http://www.austinisd.org/legislature.

For a great overview of recapture please watch this video:

SCOTTIE COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Have you seen the Scottie Community Support section of the Lamar Newsletter? This section is devoted to things happening in the extended Lamar family, such as: feeder elementary schools, high schools that Lamar feeds in to, local churches or other local organizations that are Lamar stakeholders.

We know a lot of our Lamar parents are involved in other community groups, or have children attending our vertically aligned schools.  Please be sure and send us informational write-ups and flyers for events you would like to see promoted in our Scottie Community Support section.  Please contact Ms. Hames for more information.

Hoodie Hump day is back!

Lamar Band boosters are selling light gray hoodies with the Lamar fine arts label on them? They are all around campus.  It doesn't matter what strand you are in they are all represented in this one hoodie.  You can own one of your very own.  Starting Tuesday through Friday at lunch the band boosters will be selling them for just 20 dollars.
Since this is such a short sale time, if you miss out you can contact Glenna Smith, booster president, on how to get one for your child.

EASY WAY TO SUPPORT TEACHERS AND STAFF!

A great way to volunteer at Lamar is to be a Secret Pal for a staff member or two and provide monthly treats to show your appreciation. Even if you don't know any of the staff, you can let me know what grade or classes your student is in, and I can try to match up a staff member for you. We'd like EVERY staff member to get a secret pal, custodians, office staff, teachers, etc - everyone who works to make our school a great place for our kids. It really does lift their spirits to get surprises periodically from parents. We still have more staff to match up - so we really need your help!

If you are interested, contact Monica Poss by email or calling (512) 757-0974, or even easier, fill out the online form.

GARDEN WORKDAY A HUGE SUCCESS!

We weeded and mulched the entire garden; we turned and watered the 3-tier compost system, prepared raised beds for fall veggies and herbs, and organized the shed.

Thank you so much to our 24 volunteers, including Lamar parents, students, teachers and staff, as well as volunteers from Time Warner Cable's Austin Green Team.

A special thank you to EcoRise for connecting us with TWC volunteers, and to Mr. Willenberg, Ms. Clifton, Ms. Wasserman, Mr. Sosa, Ms. Wagner, Ms. Torrance and Ms. Gomez for giving up their Saturday morning to keep our garden healthy, productive and beautiful.

What’s next? Keep Austin Beautiful will be working with students throughout the coming weeks to plant a fall garden. Blackberries and grapes will be making their debut over the trellises later this fall, and the Austin Permaculture Guild will be installing a drip irrigation system for our 14 garden beds. Oh, and we’ll be getting 4 new baby chicks this week, to grow our flock to 6! Stop by Ms. Pena’s room to check them out :)

LOW EFFORT, HIGH IMPACT WAY TO SUPPORT TEACHERS - BE A SECRET PAL

Ever wonder what you could do to make the staff and teachers at Lamar feel appreciated and special? No time to volunteer at school? The solution is to become a Secret Pal to one, two or three teachers or staff members. What do you need to do?

1) Provide a treat, supportive note or small gift once each month to your pal(s). Usually just $3-5/month. The idea is not to spend lots of money, but to do things regularly to let the folks at Lamar know we are thinking of them. I'll send emails once/month to remind you.

2) How do you know what a teacher or staff member would like? I've collected information sheets from most of the staff that tells what snacks and food they like/don't like, what office or class supplies they could use, and favorite places to get gift cards from.

3) Interested? Sign up on the Lamar Secret Pal website. Fill out the form - and be sure to hit the "submit" button! Or you can email Monica Poss directly.

BAND BOOSTER GARAGE SALE

The Band Booster Garage Sale will be on August 9th at Lamar Middle School (6201 Wynona Avenue) starting at 7AM. Please come on out and shop. Your neighbors have really great stuff!

This is the band's biggest fundraiser and we need your help to make this year's sale a success. All proceeds go towards band uniforms and scholarships for lessons and trips. This year the Lamar Symphonic Winds Band has been invited to compete in the prestigious Music For All Festival in Indianapolis. In order to insure all of our students can make this exciting trip, we need your help.
